01700	Dear @1:
01800
01900
02000
02100
02200	The third Conference on Computer Vision will be held at Pajaro Dunes,
02300	California, on the beach near Monterey. The schedule calls for
02400	arrival the evening of Tuesday, April 24, and conference sessions
02500	Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday morning.
02600
02700	The format of the conference is informal: the sessions gather a small
02800	number of specialists in vision for two and a half days of discussion
02900	in a secluded beach setting. No proceedings are published and no
03000	formal papers are presented. Such a conference allows too little
03100	evaluation, discussion, interaction and speculation. In part, this
03200	follows the feeling that the most benefit from conferences comes from
03300	the discussions in the halls, not the formal papers. The purpose of
03400	this working conference is to formulate questions which will direct
03500	research over the short term and to work out some understanding of
03600	approaches to their solutions. Research reports are up to date, not
03700	a year out of date, and research in progress is discussed.
03800
03900	The emphasis of the conference is on perception and scene analysis,
04000	almost exclusively of three dimensional objects and real world
04100	scenes. Character recognition and statistical pattern recognition are
04200	not included. The connection with perceptual psychology is explored.
04300	There is strong interest in applications in industrial robotics,
04400	biomedical instrumentation, and planetary exploration.
04500
04600
04700
04800 Where are we? Conceptually - Technically
04900 What areas are promising?
05000 Where are there difficulties?
05100
05200	PROPOSED TOPICS
05300
05400
05500	The work of Waltz in extending the Huffman-Clowes formalism achieves
05600	descriptions of symbolic line drawings of scenes of blocks. In part,
05700	this provides a conceptual understanding of the problem. Can this
05800	work be extended to localize problems in line drawings, to interact
05900	more in the process of obtaining lines? Are there similar analytic
06000	extensions to curved objects and the real world?
06100
06200	Recent work at Stanford in interpretation of complex objects has
06300	dealt with dolls, toy horses and objects of similar complexity.
06400	Where is that leading?
06500
06600	What is the state of applicability of visual and robotics techniques?
06700	What is the level of visual feedback and other applications-oriented
06800	vision?
06900 assembly applications
07000 biomedical applications
07100 planetary exploration
07200	What are feasibility estimates of cost and capability?
07300
07400	How does our knowledge interface with psychology? What are the
07500	recent results and important questions in psychology? What is
07600	common?
07700
07800	Discuss the new line of work in model driven visual strategies and
07900	recent work on outdoor scenes. How primitive are they and how
08000	extendible?
08100
08200
08300	A fee of $100.00 covers room, meals, and registration; any surplus
08400	will be returned to participants. Accomodations have been
08500	traditionally camping out in a couple of beach houses. Reservations
08600	can be made at nearby motels for those for whom the accomodations
08700	would be an inconvenience.
08800
08900	Instructions for reaching Pajaro Dunes will be provided. The
09000	location is on the coast near Watsonville and Monterey. Expect some
09100	sun and some grey, cool with some rain. We will try to arrange
09200	transportation from San Francisco Airport which is 1 1/2 hours drive
09300	to Pajaro Dunes. Please let us know your travel plans.
09400
09500	Please indicate your intent to participate, together with the advance
09600	fee of $100.00 (to Conference of Computer Vision) to:
